  At night, he is a drag-queen;
in reality, he is a Taoist priest.
The most traditional occupation and the most untraditional love.
converged in-between the death of lover and the ritual of calling his soul home.
The most vernacular splendour and the most splendid queer world,
exotic and warm; absurd but sincere.
This is a love film in/out the liminality of life and death.

Rose, as you have seen above, a taoist priest in the day and a drag queen at night.

At night, Rose dresses up in womanly garb on a brightly decorated truck with other drag queens and performs at different locations for the male audience who cheers her on. She would later get to know a man, Sunny whom she borrowed a hose from and who later courted her. They spent a night together entangled in each other’s arms.

The next morning, Sunny left her.

As if fate would have it to complete the desolation Rose felt, Sunny drowned while swimming in the sea. And ’she’ was the taoist priest assigned to serve the ritual rite of “soul-calling” and Rose was visibly more upset than Sunny’s family members.

The most poignant scene in the movie being when Rose threw the “sacred pairs” (a pair of wooden tool in a shape of used in the traditional rituals in Taiwan) to request Sunny’s permission to bring his memorial tablet home: “Will you go with me?” asked Rose. For times, the way the sacred pairs shows is negative. Rose asks again with anger and sadness, “ So, you really wanna leave me…?” and throws once more. He gets his permission this time but was the “Yes” meant for the former question or the later question leaves to be desired.

Now the memorial tablet adorns the dressing table of the “Splendid Float”. A funeral procession is carried out for Sunny at his tomb in the cemetery. When the funeral procession left, the splendid float came alive and gives forth splendour and brilliance all over around. Cross-dressing sisters are all standing by to show up. “Mic test, mic test, mic test…….. Splendid Float is going to lead you in the eternal heaven.”

On the high way along sea-shore, this splendid float full of coquettish drag queens speeds over at night. Wherever this float passes by, “underworld papers” fly to the sea. Every boat on the sea and every light on the road have witnessed the eternality of the past love in memory.

It’s getting bright at dawn. The very first sunlight shines on the tomb of Sunny. Rose decides to greet the sunshine in the morning by throwing Sunny’s yellow shirt which she has always worn to the sea. The splendid float leaves but merry singing stays, “Beautiful moment, splendid life and wonderful love make one moved…”

Hello World!

If you ever think that there are things you might like to know about me (or not), this is the perfect place to start.

  1. This is how i look like for curious seekers.
  2. My favourite beer is ice-cold Hoegaarden White for its lightness and “down-a-bility“.
  3. My all-time favourite authors are Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, Milan Kundera and Paulo Coelho and Mitch Albom.
  4. Henry David Thoreau is One Little Twit’s feel-good writer. He emphasizes on simplicity in his circumstances in order to enjoy extraordinary richness in his intellectual and spiritual life which she aspires.
  5. Her favourite quote from Henry D. Thoreau being “I went into the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”
  6. She would also like to visit these places in her lifetime (in order of sequence): Prague, Rome, Spain, Mexico, Austria, Eygpt and France.
  7. She is especially touched by well-taken black and white pictures simply because you do not need colour to show you life.
  8. She likes Christmas the best because the streets are shining with coloured, blinking lights and the fir trees dress themselves in their most splendid outfits to be admired, the spirit of giving and sharing prevalent in all.
  9. Determines quality time spent when there is group activity involving everyone. Eg. A small group of people gathering round the table for steamboat or in a house or updating each other about their lives over drinks.
  10. Hopes that Singapore has more fleamarkets that look like fleamarkets with bargain and vintage buys.
